Efforts in Nigeria include a recent operation that killed multiple senior ISIS leaders.
Secretary Pete Hegseth discussed recent efforts being made by the U.S. military to protect Christians facing persecution from ISIS in Nigeria. He stated that about one year ago, President Trump directed the Pentagon to take action to protect Nigerian Christians, who make up roughly half of the population in Nigeria. He stated that the president told him to have military leaders “focus on ensuring that we do everything we can to protect those Christians.”
Secretary Hegseth reported that, in the past month, U.S. forces eliminated ISIS’ No. 2 commander, who was primarily responsible for killing Christians as well as trying to target the United States. Other senior ISIS leaders were also killed during an operation, and no U.S. military personnel were harmed.
Air Force General Dagvin Anderson, commander of the U.S. Africa Command, stated earlier this month that the operation “underscores the exceptional value of the U.S.-Nigeria partnership and was made possible through the cooperation and coordination of our forces in recent months. Make no mistake, our two nations will relentlessly pursue and neutralize terrorist threats and are committed to protecting our people and interests.”
